Fort Clifton, in present-day Fort Clifton Park in Colonial Heights, Virginia, is a Civil War archaeological site on the Appomattox River that preserves the location of a Confederate battery. On June 11, 1864, five Union ships advanced against this position, but the Confederate fortifications, including cannon emplacements, held and drove them away. The site remains significant for its surviving earthworks, which still criss-cross the property and preserve the wartime landscape. It later gained formal recognition when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
