Henry’s Centennial Tree, also known as “The Big Tree,” was planted the same year the town of Henry was established by David and Lucenda Wiley in front of their business, Lucenda’s Millinery Shop. The tree’s circumference was 30 feet and its height was 95 feet. It survived at least two tornadoes, in 1971 and 1984, losing 10 feet of its height in 1971. It also survived the fire in 1986, which destroyed the Big Tree Café and Bar and forced the closing of Goyle’s Grocery. In recognition of this landmark, the community established a Tree and Beautification Board on Arbor Day, April 26, 2002.
