On the afternoon of May 14, while engaged with Palmer's, Schofield's, and Howard's corps, Confederate General Johnston received intelligence that Sherman's left flank was only lightly held and ordered Stewart's and Stevenson's divisions to counterattack at about 3:30 p.m. Stewart's Division, needing to cover a greater distance, at first met little resistance while moving through rough terrain and under long-range artillery fire, but two of Stevenson's brigades quickly struck Stanley's right brigade. As Stevenson's brigades wheeled left, they swept back the Federal flank and forced the 35th Indiana Infantry Regiment under Major John P. Duffey to break and flee to the rear, leaving Captain Peter Simonson's 5th Indiana Battery vulnerable. Earlier Sherman, realizing his left flank was exposed, had ordered Hooker's Corps to move northward more than a mile through rough terrain into position behind and east of Howard's IV Corps. Alpheus Williams's 1st Division arrived in time to reinforce the Federal line, and Colonel James Robinson's 3rd Brigade of Hooker's Corps stopped the Confederate advance just before dark. The day ended inconclusively: in the center, entrenched Confederate lines repulsed badly mismanaged Federal assaults; in the south, Polk's men were driven from key positions; and in the north, Confederate assaults failed after initial success, leaving neither commanding general with his objective.
