Built about 1950 in the Mid Century Modern style, Acadian Superette was chiefly associated with Joseph and Florida Petro, who built the grocery store in the 1950s after more than 25 years of success in the grocery business in Freetown. Florida Dominique Petro was born in Saint Martinville in 1910 to Paul Dominique and Catherine Azar Dominique, and the Azar family lineage was traced back to biblical times as part of the Ghassan tribal family, Habeeb. Florida married Joseph S. Petro, and the couple worked side by side in their grocery store as both their business and family grew. They had three children, Rosemarie, Joseph, Jr., and Cathy Petro, and Joseph, Jr. later worked at the family grocery and became a co-owner. Florida Petro also purchased numerous properties in Freetown for rental income and was remembered as a larger-than-life person whose strength was matched by compassion, grace, and dignity, serving as the rock of a large family rich in tradition and teaching by love and example that those in need should always be answered.
