Macon County was established in 1842 and named in honor of Nathaniel Macon, a North Carolina statesman. This place was selected as the county seat and named for Marquis de LaFayette, a French general in the American Revolution. The first courthouse was erected in 1844, and three courthouses were destroyed by fire in 1860, 1901, and 1932. The present courthouse was built in 1933.
