Sanford Stadium’s capacity increased from 36,000 to 92,746, with major additions including double decking in 1967, the East End Zone in 1981, the West End Zone in 1991, South Suites in 1994, a South Suites addition and Sky Club in 2000, Gate 6 in 2002, the North Side Upper Deck in 2003, North Suites in 2004, and a press box renovation in 2004. Other major athletic facilities included Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis in 1979; Spec Towns Track and Field Stadium in 1986 and 1987; Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall in 1987, with football renovations in 1997 and 2003; the baseball stadium at Foley Field in 1990; Stegeman Coliseum renovations in 1995; the Ramsey Center in 1996, to whose funding athletics contributed and which houses swimming and volleyball competition arenas and housed the gymnastics practice gym; the Boyd Golf Center in 1999; the Rankin M..Smith Sr. Academic Center in 2002; the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in 2003; the Soccer Stadium in 1998 and Turner Soccer Clubhouse in 2003; and the Softball Stadium in 2004. The 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics helped secure for Athens and the university three Olympic venues for soccer, volleyball, and rhythmic gymnastics.
