Shangri La, Doris Duke’s former Honolulu home near Diamond Head, was built from 1936 to 1938 after travels that inspired her to unite Islamic artistic traditions with Hawaiʻi’s landscape. Designed by Marion Sims Wyeth, the estate incorporates elements such as Moroccan ceilings, Persian tilework, and Mughal-inspired gardens. Over nearly 60 years, Duke expanded and rearranged a collection of nearly 4,500 objects, especially ceramics, wood, glass, and textiles from 1600 to 1940. Opened to the public as a museum in 2002, it remains the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to Islamic art and serves as both a historic residence and an active cultural center.
