Tackett Mountain in Young County, Texas, west of Graham, is remembered chiefly for a frontier-era fight linked to the area’s early settlement. Pleasant Tackitt, a Methodist minister and one of Young County’s first settlers, lived nearby on the old Fort Belknap and Austin Road near Fish Creek. During severe winter weather on February 13, 1860, after one of his cows returned with an arrow in her side, Tackitt and his sons followed the cattle trail to the mountain and found signs of an encampment. There they were attacked by warriors led by Old Piny Chummy, and in the clash Tackitt mortally wounded him. The mountain’s name endures through this local story.
