South Bass Island Light stands at Parker Point on the south end of South Bass Island in Lake Erie near Put-in-Bay, Ohio. Approved in 1893 and finally placed in service in 1897 after construction delays, it marked the southern passage from Sandusky to Toledo as tourism to the island grew. The lighthouse was unusual for its time, combining a 2½-story brick Queen Anne house with a three-story corner tower and a fourth-order Fresnel lens. Its history included several tragedies involving keepers. Deactivated in 1962, it was later transferred to Ohio State University, and its exterior remains largely unchanged as it continues to serve university use and occasional tours.
