Hydraulic mining using monitors was popular with large mining operations because it allowed more material to be processed daily at significantly lower cost and with higher profitability than other methods. Monitors larger than this one were common at the Malakoff Diggings near Nevada City and throughout the Mother Lode. A much smaller monitor was reportedly used to tunnel mines here in the Madera County foothills.
