Devil's Gate is a narrow granite gorge on the Sweetwater River in central Wyoming, southwest of Independence Rock, that is notable both geologically and historically. The river carved a deep cleft through a ridge instead of flowing around it because it kept its course as it eroded downward through former valley-fill sediments and then into harder granite. In the nineteenth century, the formation became an important landmark on the Oregon and Mormon trails, although wagons did not pass through the gorge itself. It holds particular importance in Mormon trail history, and later trail traffic was rerouted through Whiskey Gap after the Union Pacific Railroad reached Benton.
