The "George L" is a working English-style post mill named after Sen. George L. Radcliffe, son of John Anthony LeCompte Radcliffe, who built the original mill at this location in 1852. The original mill blew down in a March 1888 blizzard, and its steps and millstones were saved by young George and used in the reconstruction, which master boatbuilder Jim Richardson built from a model he constructed because limited information was available on how to build a post mill; it was dedicated August 22, 1972. Used to grind grain into flour, the original mill was an integral part of the self-sufficient Spocott farming and shipbuilding community.
