On April 26, 1607, Captain Gabriel Archer, Christopher Newport, Hon. George S. Percy, Bartholomew Gobfold, Edward Maria Vincefeld, and twenty-five others landed, called the place Cape Henry, and on April 29, 1607, planted a cross inscribed "Dei Gratia Virginia Condita."
