The dangerous buffalo hunt that became the signature scene of The Covered Wagon was filmed at this site on Antelope Island. Released in 1923, the film was one of the most successful works of the silent era and the first epic western ever produced. An original playbill called it “the most colossal film undertaking of all times” and declared that nothing like it had ever been done before. At the time of filming, the island herd numbered close to 200 buffalo, and cowboys from the Island Ranch were hired to stampede them in front of the cameras. Even then, it took three days before the buffalo would cooperate. The film was wildly received by the public and played to capacity audiences for months. When it opened with much excitement at the Paramount Theater in Salt Lake City, the theater served buffalo burgers at the front door. Today, only the name Camera Flat remains from that time.
