Harbor Beach Light marks the entrance to Harbor Beach on Lake Huron and protects a harbor of refuge created by the United States Army Corps of Engineers along an exposed shoreline. The present sparkplug lighthouse, built in 1885 to replace an 1877 wooden light, reflects the port’s importance as a shelter for shipping and home to one of Lake Huron’s most active lifesaving crews before the 1900s. Built as a conical brick tower encased in cast iron on a stone-weighted timber crib, it survived storm damage, was later automated, and remains a working navigational aid, local landmark, and restoration project under city ownership.
