Founded in 1850, Gainesville was named for Gen. Edmund P. Gaines, who in 1836 aided the Republic of Texas. During the Civil War it served as a military supply headquarters and was important in defense against Indian attacks and invasion. It became a center for agriculture, industry, and oil, and was home of the famed Gainesville Community Circus.
