On April 23, 1964, and April 14, 1967, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. addressed the Stanford community and local citizens in this auditorium. In his April 14, 1967, remarks, he warned against not only the vitriolic words and violent actions of bad people but also the appalling silence and indifference of good people who say, “Wait on time.” He said that social progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through the tireless efforts and persistent work of dedicated individuals, and that without such hard work time itself becomes an ally of social stagnation. He urged that people must help time and realize that the time is always right to do right.
