This area was once a center of Jackson County’s lumber industry, with the Goodyear saw mill located here on a rail-road running from Mather to Saddle mound. Around six hundred people lived around the mill, and more than one hundred thousand board feet of lumber could be sawed each day. A spur rail-road ran southwest from Lapham junction to McKenna and Zeda, and many wooden-railed tram-ways radiated out from these three saw mills. The last of the big white pines, many of them six feet in diameter, were cut on section 17, where Ben Potter later built his cranberry marsh two miles west of here.
