A settlement began here along the Guadalupe River in 1852, halfway between Kerryville and Comfort, and became known as Center Point. In 1856, residents met here to petition the state for a new county and then held the first meeting to organize the county government. Center Point resident W.D.G. Burney was elected the first sheriff of the new Kerr County. Company F of the Texas Rangers formed with Center Point rancher Neal Coldwell as captain, and 33 Texas Rangers had been buried in the Center Point Cemetery as of this date. In 1854, the first saw mill in Kerr County was built here on Verde Creek. Beginning in 1898, the Agricultural and Livestock Fair of Kerr County was held in Center Point, complete with grandstand and racetrack. By 1900, the town was bustling with a railroad station, saw and gristmills, lumberyards, banks, and other businesses.
