A vertical or "up and down" sawmill operated here in the 1800s. Excavation work in the 1970s indicates that the sawmill straddled the pit, and water to turn the mill wheel flowed through the race to a pond on Owens Creek. The sawyer's home stood on the hillside where the campground is now located. Remains of the house foundation and stone fencework are still evident, recalling this earlier period.
