In Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum stands as a major memorial and museum honoring veterans and service personnel from all branches of the military. Its origins lay in the 1890s effort by the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the dwindling ranks of Civil War veterans, and it was built on a former Union Army mustering site. Designed by Henry Hornbostel in 1907 and dedicated in 1910, the Beaux-Arts building later expanded its mission to encompass all of American military history. It also serves as a civic gathering place and houses the Hall of Valor, established in 1963.
