The Mace Brown Museum of Natural History at the College of Charleston is a free public museum and research collection focused on the paleontology of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Built around Mace Brown’s donated fossil collection, it opened in 2010 and was renamed in his honor in 2015. With more than 30,000 fossils, it is especially important for Oligocene marine vertebrates from the Charleston area, including early dolphins, baleen whales, and several type specimens. Its exhibits span from a 3.49-billion-year-old microbial mat to Pleistocene mammals and Cretaceous marine reptiles, while also supporting undergraduate study and research on marine vertebrate evolution in the Carolinas.
