Following this route in 1935, Thor Solberg became the first aviator to fly from the USA to Norway. He was the first to carry airmail from New York City to Bergen and Oslo. Based on this flight, he was able to give President Roosevelt advice during World War II that helped prevent direct bombing attacks on U.S. cities, for which the President named him a "Great American."
