Fremont Peak State Park is a small California park built around the 3,173-foot summit of Fremont Peak in the Gabilan Range, prized for sweeping views of Monterey Bay, the Pacific Ocean, the San Benito and Salinas valleys, and the Santa Lucia Mountains near Big Sur. Established in 1934 on land donated by Rollin Reeves, with George H. Moore helping lead the effort, the 162-acre park includes pine and California oak woodlands that support varied wildlife. Visitors come for hiking, picnicking, camping, and public astronomy at the Fremont Peak Observatory, whose 30-inch telescope has operated each summer since 1986 despite severe summit weather.
