Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Captain Charles Bowen raised a company known as the Osceola Hornets, which took part in the battles of Belmont and Shiloh. Initially one hundred strong, only seven returned. During Reconstruction, Bowen was instrumental in quelling carpetbagger-inspired lawlessness in the Black Hawk War of 1872.
