Fires Creek in western North Carolina's Nantahala National Forest serves both as a public recreation area and an active bear sanctuary. Centered on the creek from which it takes its name, the protected area is known for hiking, horseback riding, fishing, swimming holes, camping, picnic areas, and scenic overlooks. Its best-known route is the 23.4-mile Fires Creek Rim Trail, marked with blue blazes for hikers and horseback riders. Reached commonly from the Fires Creek Picnic Area by way of Leatherwood Falls, the trail circles the rim of the wildlife management area, passes high points including Big Stamp, Weatherman Bald, and Tusquitee Bald, and links with side trails and access roads.
