Sycamore Tavern was a stagecoach stop on the Mountain Road between Richmond and Charlottesville where horses were changed. Built in the mid-18th century, it is a typical hall-and-parlor vernacular house of the Piedmont region. For most of the 19th century, the Higgason, Barlow, and Shelburne families operated a tavern there. The sycamore trees that stood there for many years gave it its name. Since the early 20th century, it has served the educational and cultural needs of the community as part of the Montpelier School for a time and as the Page Memorial Library.
