In April 1861, eleven former slaves, including founders Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Bennett, organized what is now Bennett Union Missionary Baptist Church. Services were first held outdoors under a bush arbor until January 1870, when the congregation purchased the Second Street property that had been the site of the Pringle Adams Activity Building. After years of worshiping outside and in members’ homes during bad weather, members and friends built a wooden structure. Rev. W. F. Quarterman, called as the first pastor in 1872, laid the foundation for the church’s later growth. In 1940, the wooden building was bricked and later expanded with Sunday school classrooms, a kitchen and dining area, an office, restrooms, and storage areas. In April 1983, ground was broken for the present sanctuary, which was dedicated upon completion in 1984. Another groundbreaking took place in April 2011 for a new fellowship hall with offices, Sunday school classrooms, an auditorium, and kitchen and dining facilities, fulfilling the congregation’s long-planned Phase II.
