Maryland’s Eastern Shore vividly reflects the close relationship between land and water through its wetlands, wharves, fields, homes, shops, and churches. Stevensville offers 19th-century history and architecture through Christ Church, built about 1880 in the Gothic style, the Old Stevensville Post Office, built about 1870 and used until 1952, the Cray House, built about 1809 with rare post and plank construction, and a 23-stop walking tour through the historic district. Centreville, incorporated in 1794 and the seat of Queen Anne’s County, features pre-Civil War and Victorian-era architecture, including Wright’s Chance, the Tucker House, Providence Farm with one of the earliest surviving gambrel roofs in the Tidewater area, and a courthouse on the central green that is the oldest courthouse in continuous use in Maryland, with operations dating to 1796; Centreville Landing also reflects the influence of sea captains and maritime merchants on the Corsica River economy. Church Hill grew around a 1698 water mill whose foundation remains visible along Route 19, includes St. Luke’s Church, built about 1732 on the hill that gave the town its name, and preserves the Church Hill Theatre, built in 1929 as a movie house and saved from demolition in the 1980s. Chestertown has served as a Royal Port of Entry, witnessed a Revolutionary protest against imported tea in 1774, and long stood as a center of trade, farming, and cultural life, with places including Kent County’s historic courthouse, built about 1860, Emmanuel Church, Fountain Park, the Charles Sumner G.A.R. Hall, the Gaddes-Piper House, Washington College, founded in 1782, and many 18th-century buildings. Rock Hall, officially established in 1707, has long been an important port of call with a working waterfront heritage, interpreted through the Rock Hall Museum, the Waterman’s Museum, and the Tolchester Beach Revisited Museum, which preserves the memory of a bayside amusement park that operated from 1877 to 1962.
