On Dec. 1, 1864, the 17th Corps of Maj. Gen. W. T. Sherman’s army moved from Burton (Midville) to Herndon, Station No. 9 on the CRR, and camped in and near the town. Sherman, who had accompanied the 17th Corps since the army passed Sandersville, established his headquarters in the plantation residence of Joseph B. Jones immediately north of this point. On the 2nd, the 17th Corps marched from Herndon to Millen while work details destroyed the railroad en route and foraging parties stripped the country of provisions.
