On this site on December 9, 1864, Union General Gouvereur K. Warren, with 28,000 troops at his command, clashed with troops of Confederate Generals Wade Hampton and Wm. H. F. Lee in a failed attempt to destroy the railroad bridge and tracks going south. At the end of the day, they were still in Confederate hands. Confederate and Union men fought and died here for their beliefs.
