Camp J.G. Sturgis, named for Lt. J.G. Sturgis, who was killed on June 25, 1876, at the Battle of Little Big Horn, was established in this area on July 1, 1878, by Companies G, F, I, and K of the 1st U.S. Infantry; D and G of the 11th U.S. Infantry; and Headquarters and Troops A, C, D, E, G, I, K, and M of the 7th U.S. Cavalry. Col. S.D. Sturgis, commanding, joined the command on July 18, and Troops H and L joined on August 8. The camp was abandoned on August 28 as the troops moved to Camp Ruhlen, now Fort Meade. The cavalry arrived one day too late to prevent the Wagnus massacre a few miles north. Scooptown was located one mile west at Grasshopper Jim Frederick's store, and soldiers gave it that name because they were likely to be "scooped," or cleaned out, at that caravansary. The name later migrated when the soldiers went to Camp Ruhlen, and Sturgis was so called for a time.
