Virgil Mountain stands in central New York, east-southeast of the hamlet of Virgil in Cortland County. As the highest point in Cortland County, it holds a prominent place in the county’s geography. Its significance extends beyond the local level as well, ranking twenty-eighth among New York’s sixty-two county high points. Although it is known mainly as a regional summit rather than a major mountain destination, that standing makes it one of the more notable county high points in the state.
