The Pangborn Memorial Campanile stands on the site of the Old Church on the Hill, built in 1805 by Father John Dubois, founder of Mount Saint Mary’s College and Seminary on Saint Mary’s Mount. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton worshiped here, and here her sister-in-law, Harriet Seton, was converted to the Catholic faith. Dedicated to the glory of God and His Blessed Mother, it presents the image of the Blessed Mother as a beacon of light, hope, courage, and inspiration for those who pass this sacred spot, while the bells in its tower ring out praises to almighty God and His Blessed Mother. It was erected in humble and sincere gratitude for many blessings by Thomas W. Pangborn and John C. Pangborn, Sr., of Hagerstown, Maryland, on May 1, 1964.
