J. H. Love's New Block
History
Built in 1894 by Jim H. Love, this block originally housed his dry goods store in the south room while the north side was rented to Johnson Drug Store until a fire in 1903 forced remodeling. The building no longer has its original façade, but the south side still shows features such as a corbeled cornice, segmental arched windows, and two cast metal lion’s heads, while the replacement façade wraps around the corner and includes typical Neo-classical details. After the remodeling, Love combined both rooms, and in 1905 the Golden Eagle Department Store, a branch of a successful Oskaloosa business, moved in. Since then, the building has been divided into two parts and has housed several different businesses.
