Hal Parker American Legion Post #79 was named for Harold Malloy Parker, the first soldier from Cando, North Dakota, killed in action during World War I. After Hal died from an artillery blast and his body arrived home, some doubted that the body was his. One evening at a local saloon, a few comrades demanded that the casket be opened. The first item they saw was a corn cob pipe, and knowing that Hal always had his corn cob pipe, they declared that it had to be Hal, and the casket was closed for eternity.
