Barnsdall Art Park occupies Olive Hill in East Hollywood as both a public green space and an arts campus centered on Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House. The site grew from Aline Barnsdall’s plan for an ambitious arts and theater complex after she bought the hill in 1919, though most of that vision was never built. She eventually gave the core of the property to Los Angeles for arts and recreation, despite years of disputes with the city over control and use. In the postwar decades the park expanded with galleries and art facilities, and later planning emphasized restoration, access, and stewardship of its historic landscape and architecture.
