St. Joe National Forest is a major protected forest in Idaho's panhandle and one of three forests managed together as the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. Spanning 867,882 acres in parts of Shoshone, Latah, Clearwater, and Benewah counties, it is administered from Coeur d'Alene, with ranger district offices in Avery and St. Maries. The forest is especially known for its rich wildlife, including deer, elk, moose, black and grizzly bears, wolves, cougars, wolverines, and many smaller mammals, along with eagles, osprey, owls, grouse, turkeys, and other birds. Its size and varied habitat make it an important forested landscape in northern Idaho.
