Red Rock Wilderness Overlook Regional Park is a 67-acre, mostly wooded area along the Potomac River on the outskirts of Leesburg. Frances Speek donated a portion of the property to the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority in 1978, and the park also received support from the Land and Water Conservation Fund to help provide outdoor recreation and open space. The ruins there trace back to 1869, when wealthy industrialist turned gentleman farmer Charles Paxton purchased more than 200 acres in Loudoun County. Although best known for his Carlheim estate in Leesburg, Paxton built the structures that became the ruins, and their dimensions are much larger than typical antebellum buildings in Loudoun County because his success in the ironworking business gave him the wealth to construct them.
