Hampstead Farm Archeological District in rural Orange County, Virginia, preserves an important concentration of Native American prehistoric and historic settlement remains across a 780-acre property along the Rapidan River. A 1983 survey found 49 archaeological sites there, including deeply buried and well-preserved remains near the river and additional sites on the uplands. Together with evidence from the nearby Montpelier estate, these upland finds show the landscape’s importance in Native American occupation patterns. The farm also holds minor American Civil War fortifications, adding a later historical layer. It was recognized in 1984 and again in 1991 for its archaeological, architectural, and scenic significance.
