Company K of the 3rd North Carolina Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., composed of volunteers from what is now Pender County, was organized at Northeast Academy near this spot. The company left for active duty on June 10, 1861, and rendered valiant and sacrificial service with the Army of Northern Virginia until surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Of the original 140 men, 60 gave their lives, and 42 were seriously wounded.
