George E. "Bud" Day, a U.S. Air Force pilot and veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, was captured by enemy forces in 1967, recaptured after escaping, and finally repatriated at the end of the war after years of torture and deprivation in prison. He became one of the most decorated veterans in U.S. military history with 70+ medals, and fellow prisoner John McCain said Bud Day was the bravest man he ever knew.
