On Nov. 16, 1863, Federal Gen. Ambrose Burnside, pursued by Gen. James Longstreet from Lenoir's Station via Concord, evaded an attempt by Gen. Lafayette McLaws, C.S.A., coming from Loudon by way of the Hotchkiss Valley and Kingston Roads, to cut him off at the junction of the Concord and Kingston Roads. Burnside repelled three attacks there and then withdrew to Knoxville that night.
