Rossville was the first Scottish community in southwest Texas. It was founded in 1873 by brothers William F.M. Ross and John C. Ross, who were born in north Scotland and came to Texas in 1867. After receiving a contract to carry U.S. Mail, they noticed the fertile soil and plentiful game in this region along their route, settled there, and persuaded other Scottish families to join them. Rossville came to have a one-room school, cotton gin, post office established in 1877, two grocery stores, a bakery, and a saloon, but it declined after being bypassed by the railroad.
