Satan's Kingdom State Recreation Area in New Hartford, Connecticut, is a one-acre public site beside the Farmington River that serves as an important launch point for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. Its name comes from the nearby gorge, called Satan's Kingdom since the 1870s, a label rooted in the harsh terrain that complicated construction of the New Haven and Northampton Railroad along the river. Added to Connecticut's state park system in 2012, the area is now closely tied to river recreation, including a 2.5-mile trip through three sets of rapids, with nearby access to hiking trails in Nepaug State Forest.
