Garfield Peak is a 7,976-foot summit on Crater Lake’s southern rim in Crater Lake National Park, rising above the lakeshore near Crater Lake Lodge. Formed after Mount Mazama’s eruption about 7,700 years ago, it stands on the caldera rim and is known for vividly colored volcanic rock altered by sulfur steam from fumaroles. Named for James Rudolph Garfield, Secretary of the Interior under Theodore Roosevelt, it reflects the park’s early national history; Garfield visited in 1907 as the first cabinet member to come there. Its popular trail leads to wide views of Crater Lake, while its slopes support notable high-elevation plants, birds, and mammals.
