Dreher Island State Park, about 30 miles from Columbia in central South Carolina, occupies the largest island in Lake Murray, a 50,000-acre reservoir created by Dreher Shoals Dam on the Saluda River. Reached by a bridge on the island’s north side, the park began as leased land in 1970 through SCE&G and was named for former owner Billy Dreher. Still largely heavily wooded, it is shaped by its island setting and shoreline. Boating, fishing, hiking, camping, picnic areas, group meeting space, and overnight cabins and villas make it one of Lake Murray’s main public recreation areas, offering easy access to the lake with a secluded feel.
