In Houghton, Michigan, the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw is devoted to the region’s cultural and natural history in a former public library funded by a $15,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie. Built in 1909 and opened in 1910 on the site of the Armory Building for Company G of the Houghton Light Infantry, the two-story Classical Revival structure served as the public library for nearly a century before the library moved in 2006. The museum opened there in fall 2006, preserving the historic building’s civic role. Its significance was recognized by state and national historic designations and by its 2013 designation as a Heritage Site of Keweenaw National Historical Park.
