Tolo, a Nez Perce woman whose given name was Alab-lemot, was called Tolo, meaning "win" in the Chinook tongue, because she loved to gamble. Strong, determined, motherly, and sometimes feisty, she lived in 1877 with her sisters and two daughters at Slate Creek, where she was loved and respected. When word came of a possible Nez Perce uprising, she traveled 28 miles to Florence to warn her friends, rode all night over a rugged trail, and returned to Slate Creek the next day with help for the settlers. The settlers believed her efforts discouraged an attack on the stockade. In appreciation, she was allotted land off the reservation, and later a small lake on the Camas Prairie, where the Nez Perce camped and held powwows, was named Tolo Lake in her honor. The summer of 1877 was the last time Chief Joseph led his band across the Camas Prairie after he and several hundred men, women, and children had been driven from their homeland in Oregon's Wallowa Valley and ordered by the U.S. Army to settle on a newly created reservation in Lapwai. Hoping for a peaceful solution, Joseph and his people resisted the move, but after a young Nez Perce man, Wahlitits, taunted into avenging his father's death, joined two other young men in firing the first shots on several Salmon River settlers on June 13, 1877, the battle at White Bird followed, leaving 34 U.S. Army soldiers and two volunteers dead and no Nez Perce casualties. Other skirmishes at Cottonwood, Clearwater, and Kamiah caused many deaths on both sides, and the fighting continued for several months over many miles until, at the Bear Paw battlefield in Montana, 40 miles from freedom in Canada, Chief Joseph surrendered on October 4, 1877, saying, "The old men are all dead. The little children are freezing to death... Hear me, my chiefs - my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever."
