At turn-of-the-century Lake Tahoe, the Tallac Resort and Casino was promoted as "The Grandest Resort in the World," covered more than 40 acres, and offered guests extensive amenities. Elias "Lucky" Baldwin acquired Tallac Point House in 1880, improved it, and used it as a hotel that patrons enjoyed until the building burned down in 1914. In 1899 he constructed the new Tallac Hotel and over the next several years added the Casino, Baldwin Cottage, several other cottages, and two large annexes, along with grounds improvements that included a fountain, a promenade, a garage, a boathouse, and three piers.
